Line of sight is something you can control while still moving up rather than the field basically being a flat plane with eyes in every direction. Take for example the newfoundland fish store, or all the alleyway maps - if the aliens spot you it's because they came through a door, not they saw you through a window because there are no windows. You don't get enclosed buildings that let you block LOS like you did in EW. Like, for example, because of the random generation each tile is made so you can easily go in any direction so stuff doesn't break or become impossible. The few bits of the X2 maps I do like are the large setpieces that feel like you carved a chunk out of an EW map. I have a big problem with the randomly generated X2 maps because they all feel extremely samey to me (within their own tileset). Kinda like playing a multiplayer game and learning the ins and outs of each map. I like EW's maps because each one is unique and - even though you may be replaying the same ones over and over, this gives you room to develop overarching strategies for each. Personally, I'm actually in the other camp on this. Even LW's bandaid of having new spawn points doesn't fix this. On top of that, no matter how great you make all your maps, in a game where you'll be playing it over and over again, you will get frequent repeats and having to replay the exact same level will get old. My favorite enemy from XCOM 2 is probably the Andromedon, because it's such a cool idea that it will just become another type of enemy, once killed for the first time and the pilot is just hanging out of the cockpit or whatever. Overall I like XCOM 2 War of the Chosen so much more, but it's undeniable that some good bits and pieces from EW were lost somewhere along the way. Because you know, as soon as this unit gets a turn, it will just do a shield, not fire immediately. In XCOM 2 you don't even have to shoot at a freshly encountered shieldbearer for instance. And the huge robotic units have tons of health and there are no bluescreen rounds. EW enemies have these cloaked units, that can become visible and attack/choke at any time. XCOM 2 enemies, while I like them, they are much more predictable, you usually know exactly what attack they are going to attempt. There is even a price to killing the enemies. ![]() Even the thin men (as a weaker unit) blow up into poison clouds or whatever. It can transform at any time, you never know what it's going to do and even if it is destroyed, it will cause a huge explosion, that can kill soldiers that are too close to it. I think it's more the design and presentation of the enemies - to a lesser degree the story. That's true, but there's more to it somehow.
